Description: Large scale commercial shipping of liquefied natural gas (LNG) started in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with a series of ships constructed to carry up to 70,000 cubic metres of LNG. As was normal at that time, ships of this
size were powered by steam turbines connected via a reduction gearbox to a single propeller. Three kinds of tank and containment system were used, two of the supported membrane type and one of the self-supporting
spherical type.
