Description: Interest in old craft has now reached a high level. More and more people are keen to preserve a tradition and an increasing number want to return old craft to their original working condition and use them. It is no longer a question of museums alone being interested.
John Lewis, then, has produced a particularly. valuable book, because he not only deals with the preservation and lore of the vessels he looks at, but describes the way they worked.
First he documents the sources of information and lessons that can be learned from the restoration of large vessels like Victory and Wasa and from the work done by such museums as Mystic Seaport.
Then he describes in detail the restoration and rebuilding of one particular oyster smack, the Boadicea, and, for comparison describes the restoration of a Thames bawley, a Dutch fishing botter and three American fishing smacks. There is also a detailed description of the building of a gun punt.
The next section deals with larger vessels, including fishing schooners and barges., and there is a further section on the different problems of yacht restoration, covering a 220-ton racing schooner, a 20-ton Sibbick-built ketch and a Linton Hope Broads One-design.
The final part of the book describes the restoration and rebuilding of steam launches and their engines and boilers.
This is an entirely unique book with outstanding illustrations which will have an appeal to all who have any interest in old craft, be they sailing or power. It also has enough practical information to be of considerable value to anyone contemplating the restoration of an old craft.
John Lewis is a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers, an illustrator, editor and author. He is the author of over a dozen books including a recent monograph of the eccentric genius, Heath Robinson. He writes among other things about boats and the sea and in the writing of the present book he says he has met many more endearing lunatics than he has ever found in the world of art and design. He is probably best known to yachtsmen for his long-established work.
