Genre: Guide Publisher: Macmillan @ Co Ltd Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages Pages count: 129 Description: THE word beginner admits of several interpretations. In writing this book I have had in mind the following : (a) The absolute beginner-newcomer to all things nautical; of any age; who has just acquired a boat, or contemplates acquiring one. (b) The amateur sailor, perhaps an expert in some sphere, or at any rate of some experience, who yearns after wider horizons. (c) The landsman who has been invited to spend week-ends afloat with friends, or who finds himself in any way among nautical company, and as a result is suffering from an acute inferiority complex. (d) The landsman lacking all such opportunities, who yet has salt water in his veins, who falls back upon vicarious fireside seafaring and wishes for a handbook which will tell him 'what it is all about'. Therefore I have concentrated rather upon amateur 'little-ship' seafaring than upon big-ship practice, and have only introduced the professional aspect occasionally for comparison, or for the sake of interest. In all subjects I have tried to start from absolute beginnings, explaining terminology as I go along, and taking nothing for granted except, perhaps, in navigation, an elementary knowledge of mathematics.
