Description: n 3rd June the 87,967gt/2011-built and 316m long/8,540 TEU capacity containership OOCL Durban, operated by Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), collided with the moored 32,720gt/2021-built and 2,940 TEU capacity YM Constancy and a gantry crane while manoeuvring towards her berth at the Port of Kaohsiung. The YM Constancy suffered minor hull damage but the gantry crane suffered considerable damage during its fall and damaged a second gantry crane adjacent to it. The incident also damaged 30 to 50 containers but the OOCL Durban was not carrying any cargo at the time.
The 54, 152gt/2007-built and 5,090 TEU capacity Ital Libera, operating for Evergreen, became a Covid refugee in April following the death of her Italian Captain, Angelo Capurro, 61, on 13th April in Indonesian waters having contracted Covid-19. Other crewmembers also contracted the virus whilst the ship was en route from Durban to Singapore. A host of Asian ports have since denied the ship access and the captain's family became increasingly distraught. Force majeure was then declared and the ship was diverted to call at an Italian port first in order to repatriate the captain.
The 2,370gt/1986-built cargo vessel River Thames ran aground on a sandbar south of Formentera, Ibiza in early June. A tug was requested to tow the ship and her crew of 9 clear of Migiorn Beach when the tide permitted. The vessel was carrying a shipment of wood pulp and clay at the time of the mishap.
On 20th June Hamburg Sud's 118,938gt/2014-built and 10,500 TEU capacity Cap San Antonio hit the passenger jetty at the port of Santos in Brazil. The ship suffered a hole in her portside hull with some ballast water leakage. In 2018, a similar accident happened involving a Hapag-Lloyd ship and the same jetty.
On 23rd June the owners and insurers of the Ever Given were said to have reached agreement in principle in a compensation dispute with the Suez Canal Authority, their representative and the canal's Chairman. The Ever Given has been anchored in the Bitter Lake since she was freed from blocking the canal after 6 days on 29th March. All parties agreed to settle this issue in a peaceful way without going through the courts and agreed on a final settlement. The deal was being drafted to be reviewed by the Suez Canal Authority (SCA). The SCA had demanded $916 million in compensation to cover salvage efforts, reputational damage and lost revenue before publicly lowering the request to $550 million. The Ever Given's Japanese owners, Shoei Kisen, and its insurers have disputed the claim and the ship's detention under an Egyptian court order. The settlement reached was seen as satisfactory by the canal authority. On 5th July came the very welcome news that the Ever Given could resume her voyage on 7th July, 106 days after she entered the Suez Canal. The ship was expected to head to Rotterdam with the SCA saying that it would hold a ceremony to mark the ship's departure.
