Description: The pilot's tools were once the lead line, the compass, the pelorus, and the chip log, and his skill with these simple instruments was often legendary. Today the pilot's task is asier, but the mere presence of electronics aboard a boat does not guarantee a safe coastal passage itself. It still is true that coastal sailors must be the best navigators, but the navigator must know how to use them properly and allow for their inherent limitations.
This book is intended for the small-boat sailor, the powerboat operator, and the skipper of a crabber, shrimper, interisland freighter, or other small commerciai vessel. The focus is on those systems most likely to be found aboard smaller boats.
