Year: 2015 Language: english Author: Philip E. Steinberg, Jeremy Tasch Genre: Documentation Publisher: I.B. Tauris ISBN: 978‐1780761480 Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 224 Description: The title of the book sums up quite well the interest in the Arctic, which has always existed and recently renewed: the strategic and geopolitical interest, for natural resources and for the consequences of climate change. The starting point of the work is the Ilulissat Declaration, signed in 2008 by the five states bordering the Arctic Ocean (Canada, Denmark, United States, Norway and Russia) to discuss the climate change, the marine environment, and maritime safety, aiming to establish a good legal management. In these agreements the division of responsibility in a search and rescue scenario, in case of new shipping routes are opened, is included. The book also pays particular attention to a long underestimated issues: Greenland and the consequences of its eventual independence, China and his interest in the resources of the region, symbolized by the presence of a chinese scientific base in Svalbard. The well known dilemma, between economic development and environmental issues, is well pointed out in this work, as well as the fact that the future of the Arctic will be a matter of balancing the needs and the protagonists in this theater, in order to avoid a possible conflict in the area.
