Description: IMO requirements states that SOLAS vessels must be equipped with with a Transmitting Heading Device (THD) to determine and display heading by shipborne non-magnetic means, and to transmit heading information for input to radar, AIS, ECDIS and VDR. A THD is defined “an electrical device that provides information about the ship’s true heading.” The ship’s heading data must be provided in a standard format that can be used by other equipment as specified in IMO regulations. Apart from gyrocompasses, there have been for some years devices that provide true heading based on satellite technology. This booklet is a brief, practical guide to GNSS transmitting heading devices. It explains how GNSS satellite-based technology can can satisfy this requirements, providing stable, accurate and price-competitive heading data.
