Advisory on Decarbonization Applications for Power Generation and Propulsion Systems
Year: 2021 Language: english Author: ABS Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 76 Description: Climate change is an overarching global issue. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015, pledging to take on increasingly ambitious targets aimed at stabilizing and then sharply reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emissions to keep the average global temperature rise below 2° C and preferably limit it to a safer 1.5° C above pre-industrial levels. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently set ambitious targets for decarbonization of the global fleet, to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work by at least 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050, and to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008. This strategy was set in April 2018 by Resolution MEPC.304(72). In addition, a roadmap (2017–2023) was approved for developing a “comprehensive IMO strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships.” The revised strategy is due for adoption in 2023. Recognizing the overall challenge of the 2050 IMO targets, ABS has developed a series of documents to reference available carbon reduction strategies, identify gaps for meeting the 2050 goals, and inform the shipping industry as it enters the uncharted waters of the 2030/2050 emissions challenge.
