1 SAFETY
1.1 Safety: Warning

National Oilwell Varco provides technical manuals for the different types of equipment it manufactures and sells. The owner and user must use these technical manuals to give the correct information and traini ng to the people who will operate, maintain, or supervise the use of the equip ment.
This equipment is designed to do heavy-duty work and will wear during normal use. Therefore, the owner and user must establ ish a regularly scheduled inspection and maintenance program based on the information in the National Oilwell Varco technical manual. Inspection and maintenance programs help prevent accidents and keep the equipment operating efficiently.

1.2 Safety Signal Words
Throughout this technical manual are steps and procedures that, if not followed, can result in a hazard. The followi ng signal words are used to identify the level of a hazard.
Adanger
• Danger is used to show a hazard that WILL RESULT in death or serious injury if not avoided.
Awarning
• Warning is used to show a hazard or unsafe practice that CAN RESULT in death or serious injury if not avoided.
Acaution
• Caution is used to show a hazard that WILL or CAN RESULT in minor or moderate injury if not avoided.
CAUTION
• Caution used without the safety alert symbol A is used to show a hazard that WILL or CAN RESULT in equipment or property damage if not avoided.

1.3 Safety Rules
National Oilwell Varco equipment, as designed, can be used safely; however, no equipment, regardi ess of design, can prevent injury or damage because of operator error or care i ess-ness.
This safety section includes information from many sources. It gives examples of basic safety rules. Additional safety rules can be necessary for safe operation of the equipment. The information in this section is not meant to replace safety codes; insurance requirements; or national, federal, provincial, state, and local laws and regu i ations.
1.3.1 General Safety Rules
1. DO NOT USE ANY PART OF THIS EQUIPMENT BESIDES THE WHIP HOIST TO LIFT OR LOWER PERSONNEL. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE WHIP HOIST, THIS EQUIPMENT IS MADE FOR MATERIAL HANDLING ONLY. USING THE WHIP HOIST TO LIFT OR LOWER PERSONNEL REQUIRES FOLLOWING SPECIAL PERSONNEL-HANDLING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS. REFER TO “PERSONNEL LIFTING” IN THE LATEST REVISION OF ANSI/ASME STANDARD B30.8 AND ANSI/ASME B30.23 (SEE PARAGRAPH 3.2).
2. Wear protective cloth i ng and safety equipment as required by job conditions when operat i ng the equipment or worki ng in the area of the equipment. Do not wear loose clothi ng that can catch on controls or moving equipment parts.
3. Keep the operator’s area and the work area clean and free of debris.
4. Keep all platforms, steps, and walki ng surfaces clean, dry, and free of debris.
Keep them painted with non-skid paint.
5. Keep the equipment clean and free of dirt and debris, to permit a good inspection of the equipment.
6. Check the rigging daily and before any heavy lifts. Rigging that is damaged must be repaired or replaced before it can be used.
7. Before making a heavy lift, make a test lift of a known load or a calibration check of the load monitori ng system (LMS). Do this to check that the LMS is operat i ng correctly and displaying accurate information.
8. Do not use a chain or sling having a knot or kink or is spliced using bolts. Do not use knots, bolts, or hook wraps to shorten slings.
9. Do not weld on hooks, sockets, or shackles. Weldi ng on these items can weaken the material, caus i ng failure.
10. Do not use torches or open flame on or near control equipment parts.
11. Adequate fire protection equipment must be available and in satisfactory operating condition. Operating and maintenance personnel must be famil i ar with the use and care of the fire protection equipment.
1.3.2 Operating Safety Rules
1. Do not operate this equipment under any conditions or in any manner other than those for which the equipment has been specified, sold, and described in this technical manual.
2. This equipment must be operated only by personnel who are trained and authorized for its operation.
3. Do not operate this equipment if you are ill or phys i cally or mentally not fit to operate it correctly and safely.
4. Do not exceed the rated load capaci ty of the equipment (see Section 6, Capaci ty Charts, drawi ngs 1594855, 1594856, 1594857, 1594858, 1596451, and 1598177). Lift i ng loads greater than those shown on the capaci ty chart or operation at positions not shown, or lift i ng when the boom is solid against the boom stops, can cause structural failure or collapse of the boom or crane and death or injury to personnel. Do not exceed the rated linepull capaci ty of the tuggers (see paragraph 6.5).
Do not permit a tugger to resist a
load—doing so can cause the rated linepull
capac i ty to be exceeded.
5. Do not rely on the load monitori ng system (LMS) when common sense judgment suggests an error. Do not use the LMS as a weigh i ng device after lifti ng the load.
6. Operate the equipment with no load at the start of each workday to make sure all functions work correctly.
7. The operator must watch the load at all times. Do not operate the equipment if the operator’s vision is restricted. Some applications require a signal person. The signal person must be visible to the operator at all times. The operator and the signal person must agree on the signals to be used before operati ng the equipment (see paragraph 1.5).
8. An audible signal must be sounded to warn personnel in the area before a load or empty lift i ng equipment is raised, lowered, or swung.
9. Communication must be maintained between all personnel involved in any operation. The operator must obey a signal to stop from anyone in the area. The signal person must give all other signals.
10. Do not permit personnel to get on or off the equipment while it is operat i ng.
11. Do not operate the equipment with any personnel near the wire rope or moving equip ment.
12. Do not operate the equipment without the safety guards installed.
13. Do not bypass, disconnect, or ignore safety and warn i ng devices of the equipment. Safely shut down the equipment and inves-tigate the prob i em. Correct the prob i em before contin u ing oper a tion.
14. Do not operate the equipment after an inspection reveals a safety hazard or if any equipment parts require maintenance or replacement. Always look for equipment damage or abnormal functioni ng during operation. If found, safely shut down the equipment and correct the prob i em before contin u ing oper a tion.
15. Before rotat i ng the crane, make sure that the crane tailswing as well as the swing paths of the boom and load are free of obstructions and personnel. Not followi ng this procedure can result in damage to the crane, the load, and other equipment and structures, and death or injury to personnel.
16. Operate the equipment at a slow speed when first learni ng.
17. Check the load monitori ng system (LMS) display and all closed circuit television (CCTV) monitors, gauges, and indicator lights often for normal operati ng conditions. Shut down the equipment immediately if the displays, monitors, gauges, and indicator lights show that the equipment is outside of its normal operating conditions. Investigate and correct the probl em before continui ng operation.
18. Carefully plan your lifts to prevent accidents (see paragraph 1.4). If you have questions about the safety of the lift, ask your supervisor. If there is a prob i em during a lift, stop the lift and safely lower the load.
19. Maximum crane stabil i ty is achieved when the boom is at its highest worki ng angle (minimum outreach). Consequently, all lifts should be made with the shortest possible worki ng radius (outreach).
20. When making a lift the boom (hook) must be directly over the load, not the side of the load. Side load i ng can cause structural failure or collapse of the boom or crane and injury to personnel.
21. When making a lift the hook must be directly over the estimated center of grav i ty of the load before the load is attached to the rigging. Do not attach capaci ty loads at maximum outreach, because an outward swing of the load, caused by vessel list or trim, or outward drift of the boom, can overload the crane.
22. Loads must be safely rigged before lift i ng. Do not overl oad slings. Slings must be attached to the throat of the hook. Do not permit hook latches to support any part of the load. Hook latches keep loose slings from coming off the hooks.
23. Use extreme caution when rotat i ng the crane with a load suspended. When lift i ng a heavy or bulky load, it is recommended that the load control tugger wire ropes be attached to each side of the load to prevent the load from rotati ng or swingi ng.
24. When using handl ines (ropes) to guide or snub a load, do not permit personnel to wrap the rope around any part of their body.
25. Personnel must be clear of the work area before making the lift.
26. Do not quickly accelerate or quickly decelerate a moving load.
27. Loads must be moved at as low a level as possible. If the load slips, it must be lowered with caution immediately.
28. Do not swing or position the load or attachment over personnel. Do not permit personnel to be in a hazardous position between a swingi ng load and a fixed object.
29. The operator must watch the load at all times. The load must be completely lowered before looki ng away from the load.
30. The operator must not leave the control station until the equipment has been shut down and is completely stopped.
31. The operator must not leave the control station with a load suspended in the air.
32. The hoist drum pawls (dogs) must be engaged when the drums are to be kept from rotat i ng for a period of time.
33. The boom hoist must have at least one-half layer of wire rope on the drum at all times during operation. Other hoist drums must have at least three wraps of wire rope on the drums at all times during operation.
34. Do not permit the wire rope to wind wrong on the hoist drum (see figure 1-1).

1.3.3 Maintenance Safety Rules
1. Shut down the equipment before doing main te nance. Only qual i fied, trained maintenance personnel must do maintenance, adjustment, and inspection procedures, followi ng the procedures outlined in the tech ni cal manual.
2. All replacement and repaired parts must meet the manufacturer’s current specifications.
3. After making a repair or adjustment, always check the function i ng of the equipment parts before putt i ng the equipment into full operation.
4. The brakes and clutches of the hoists, swing drives, and tuggers must always be dry, correctly adjusted, and free from lubricant contam i nation. Injury to personnel or damage to the equipment can result if the brake and clutch adjustments are not correct.
5. Do not make modifications to the equipment unless approved in writ i ng by National Oilwell Varco.
1.4 Planning Lifts
The signal person must be visible to the operator at all times. The operator and the signal person must agree on the signals to be used before operati ng the equipment (see paragraph 1.5).
Carefully plan your lifts to prevent accidents. If you have questions about the safety of the lift, ask your supervisor. If there is a prob i em during the lift, stop the lift and safely lower the load.

• Do not operate the equipment if you are ill or physically or mentally not fit to operate it correctly and safely.
The operator must check the followi ng before
making the lift:
1. The shape of the object to be lifted.
2. The rated load capaci ty of the equipment.
3. The weight and center of grav i ty of the load, includi ng the slings.
4. The limits of the slings.
5. The crane tailswing and swing path of the boom and load for obstructions and personnel.
6. The position the load will take when it is lifted.
7. How high the load will have to be lifted.
