Description: There are 5 brief guides issued by UK Health and Safety Executive concerning port & ships' activities:
- A quick guide to health and safety at ports (2011). This leaflet is highlights the main hazards found in ports and outlines what you need to do to comply with the law. It is mainly aimed at employers and other dutyholders but it should be helpful to all those carrying out work in ports. This includes stevedores, visiting drivers and also anyone who may work at docks occasionally.
- Confind spaces - Brief guide (2013). The leaflet is aimed at employers and the self-employed who carry out work in confined spaces, but will also be useful to anyone involved in carrying out work in confined spaces. The leaflet covers the following:
• what a confined space is
• what the dangers are
• safe systems of work
• emergency procedures
It explains, simply, what action is necessary to meet the requirements of the Confined Spaces Regulations
- Controlling fire and explosion risks in the workplace (2013). A brief guide to the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations. It explains what employers may need to do to protect their employees from fire and explosion risks. It will also be useful to employees and their representatives. This revised version has clarified the advice but the guidance remains fundamentally the same.
- Guidance on permit-to-work systems (2005). Guidance intended to provide a basic understanding of what is meant by a permit-to-work system with advice that is meant to be of a general - but not exhaustive - nature. Designed to assist in three basic ways: enable assessment of current permit systems against principles proposed in this document; guidance on harmonisation of terminology particularly to assist those who travel from site to site; to enable development of a new system based on current good practice.
- Risk assessment - Brief guide (2014). This leaflet aims to help you identify, assess and control health and safety risks associated with workplace hazards – the guidance replaces ‘Five steps to risk assessment’. It is mainly aimed at employers, managers and others with responsibility for health and safety, and will also be useful to employees and safety representatives.
The guidance makes clear that only significant findings need to be recorded and emphasises the importance of controlling the risks identified. However, the guidance still suggests that you should identify the hazards, think about who might be harmed, evaluate the risks, record your significant findings and review your risk assessment.
