Year: 2003 Language: english Author: INTERTANKO Genre: Guide Publisher: INTERTANKO Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 254 Description: The Tanker Specification Awareness Guide has been compiled in order to draw attention to certain technical and operational matters which can be used to improve the technical specifi-cation of a tanker at the design and contract negotiation stages, as part of an overall effort to build a better tanker. The main aim is to provide assistance in the process of investigating, evaluating and making informed choices, and thus reinforcing final decisions, during the negotiation of a newbuilding contract with a shipyard. The Guide can serve not only as a compendium of other companies' experiences but also as a checklist of items to follow up and points to further investigate and develop. It is not the intention of this Awareness Guide to rewrite the rules of the classification societies but rather to work within the existing regime to provide the industry with the means of constructing tankers to a higher standard than is currently the common practice. Such a step is deemed to be necessary because there are serious doubts about the ability of the current stan-dards to ensure the safe operation of a new generation of tankers over their full working lives. A single tanker accident is one accident too many, and commercial pressures should not be allowed to reach such a level that they add to the likelihood of an accident occurring. The Guide has been prepared in such a way so that it can be amended in future to take account of further operational experience, intra-industry cooperation and technological advances. The extent to which future editions are updated and brought to focus on the key issues of the day will depend on how users take advantage of the first edition of the Awareness Guide and build it into a working tool for the entire industry. The Guide will also be available in an electronic format to enable individual companies to log the experiences and practices of their own site teams during the construction of their tanker. Additional info: INTERTANKO has been the voice of independent tanker owners since 1970, ensuring that the oil, products and chemicals that keep the world economy turning is shipped safely, responsibly and competitively.
