Boats with an Open Mind: Seventy-Five Unconventional Designs and Concepts
Year: 1994 Language: english Author: Philip Bolger Genre: Guide Publisher: International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press Edition: First ISBN: 978-0070063761 Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages Pages count: 978-0070063761 Description: Boats with an open mind, or BWAOM as it is known in Bolgerite circles, is the only Phil Bolger book still in regular print. It presents a summary of some 75 designs from very small craft to large ocean going vessels, for power, sail and oar. Bolger was an extremely prolific designer and this book contains an extract mainly of some of his later work, although you cannot tell this from the book itself. The book may be considered as a catalog of designs and cartoons. Reading each one of the stories and articles grants the reader access to the thought process behind each of the designs and the reason they came to be. Bolgers style is interesting and funny with surprises and challenges every page. Some of the plans are complete and sufficient to actually build the boat from the book. However, I would suggest to anyone contemplating more than the simplest craft that they refrain from doing so and buy proper plans from the designers estate (Phil Bolger & Friends). PB&F follow a principle of responsible updating of plans, so by buying from them you ensure you have the benefit of all the learning process since the book was published.
