Year: 1937 Language: english Author: Colton F. J. Genre: History Publisher: G.P. Putnam's Sons Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages Pages count: 296 Description: This handbook details all the square-rigged sailing ships existing at the time of publication. "As far as we know, there exists no handbook covering all the square-rigged sailing ships surviving today. It is known that this type of ship has seen its day and served its purpose and now is no more, with but few exceptions, on the waters of the globe. Yet, beyond that fact, very little is understood concerning actual figures dealing with existing vessels. As Mr. Colton tells us in this saga of square-rigged ships, a considerable numver are still serving under various flags in scattered portions of the world. Many of these are fine vessels of a past generation, serving under other names and in other trades than those for which they were intended, while others are specimens of the altter day sailing ship. Last of the Square-Rigged Ships includes the names, present and past; a description of the individual vessel taking in the material of which she is constructed, the date of building, name of builders and place of building, peculiarities of rig, and an outline of her auxiliary equipment giving horsepower and speed, the name of the builder and the place of its construction. Further, in order to give a clearer pictire of the vessel there is also given gross and net tonnage according to Lloyds system of measurement; length on water line, breadth to outside plank and depth amidships. Following the descriptive matter is found a history of the vessel and a list of the ship's passages. Mr. Colton, over a long period of time, delved into records and talked with ship-owners, builders and captains all over the world. These men asked him to write up the material and so fulfill a long existing need before the facts are lost forever even to the means of the research worker." - from the dust jacket. Additional info: Captain Joseph Ferrell Colton ( b. August 30, 1914, in Ardmore, Penn. - d. October 12, 1999, Tuscon, Arizona) American seafarer and author.
