Coastal and maritime tourism is an important sector. This sector employs more than 3.2 million people and generates EUR 183 billion in total gross value added. It also represents over a third of the maritime industry. The regions bordering Europe account for 51% of Europe's hotel bed capacity. The Blue Growth Strategy of the EU has identified the maritime and coastal tourism sector as an area that has special potential to foster a smart and sustainable Europe. On February 20, 2014, the EU Commission adopted the Communication, titled "A European Strategy for more Growth and jobs in Coastal and Maritime Tourism". This new blueprint aims to increase European coastal and maritime tourism and unlock its potential. The strategy is being implemented by the Commission through an action plan that includes 14 actions.
