The Management of Ship-Generated Waste On-board Ships
Year: 2017 Language: english Author: CE Delft, CHEW Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages + text layer Pages count: 90 Description: EMSA is assisting the European Commission in its work on the potential revision of Directive 2000/59/EC (EC, 2000) on port reception facilities for shipgenerated waste and cargo residues, also called the PRF Directive. One of the issues that have been raised is the quantity of ship-generated waste (SGW) onboard of ships and how it is managed. The literature on this issue is outdated and does not reflect new developments in waste handling and treatment. Better information on the amount of waste generated during a voyage, the waste management practices on-board of ships and on the amount of waste discharged in ports, would help regulators, ports and waste handlers plan for the reception and delivery of waste. The objectives of this study are: 1. To provide a detailed review of the waste practices and management of ship-generated waste on-board on the range of ships visiting EU ports. 2. To provide average quantities of different types of waste being generated on-board of ships. 3. To provide a comprehensive review of the present technologies and methods being used to reduce SGW produced by ships.
