Описание: As the shipping industry prepares for paperless navigation and the use of ECDIS, we at NYK reviewed the impact of this change on training, navigation and bridge procedures. Considering that ECDIS will bring about a significant change in the methods and techniques of navigation rather than the navigation skills it is important to understand the impact, benefits and risks associated. At the same time, due to the nature and sophistication of this modern equipment and its simplicity to operate, trend could be developing among bridge team members for placing almost complete reliance on the ECDIS system during navigation while ignoring the more traditional techniques of safe navigation and errors that could be caused by incorrect operation or understanding of the ECDIS.
Using the know how of ECDIS and experience of operating fully ECDIS vessels over the last few years. ). NYK has developed this "Standard for Navigation using ECDIS" with the aim to assist the navigating officers and ship management companies in using this equipment efficiently and understanding the risk associated. This standard also prondes information regarding minimum safety settings which NYK requires on their vessels. Although these guidelines are providing examples based on terminology and features provided in ECDIS manufactured by JRC and FURUNO, navigating officers and ship management companies should mirror these requirements or safer options when applying these to ECDIS equipment manufactured by other makers.
NYK expects that these standards shall enhance the knowledge of personnel involved in ECDIS use and also provide valuable information in supporting safe navigation using ECDIS.
