Description: The yard block of a container terminal is a central and critical joint, because it has to sort and synchronize container flows between vessels and internal road transport. The very structure of the block causes containers are stacked on top of each other, with only the topmost container directly accessible by a yard crane, in a First In Last Out (FILO) logic. This book describes a new and integrative approach to container handling in yard blocks to optimise productivity, by minimising re-handling operations (multiple container movements before final picking and loading).
