The Projection and Calculation of the Sphere

Year: 1861
Language: english
Author: S. M. Saxby
Publisher: Longman
Format: PDF
Quality: Scanned pages + text layer
Pages count: 138
Description: This manual was written with the aim of reintroducing a solid foundation for the study of nautical astronomy. The author complains that in more than a century the method of teaching what is called the "Art of Navigation" has been gradually changing, and the knowledge of principles has been consequently decreasing in England, while other nations have maintained a high standard.
The introduction recalls the fundamental principles of trigonometry and calculus. Then the author analyzes in detail the spherical projection, the construction of the spherical triangle and its resolution, and finally the solution of classic nautical problems such as the calculation of the altitude, the hour angle, the orthodromic distance, the amplitude and the rise of the celestial bodies.
