Description: This manual is a comprehensive and modern textbook about the theory of orbital mechanics, its practical application, and up-to-date samples of how it is used in the field. It is not just a textbook for studying lectures; it is also a handbook for practitioners. The book kalso contains historical notes and many useful appendices.
Topics are divided into six main parts:
- The first part, Chapters 1–3, is dedicated to geodesy: ellipse and its geometrical properties, gravitational potential and the geoid.
- Then Chapters 4–8, focuses on the motion of the satellite, from the ideal, Keplerian case to the real, perturbed case.
- The third part, Chapters 9–11, deals with the actual functioning of satellites, their missions and the ways that orbits are designed for purpose.
- Chapters 12 and 13 consider the instruments carried aboard the satellite from a geometrical point of view. From the different ways of observing the Earth from a satellite, to the conditions under which a given point on the Earth can view the satellite, considering the viewing angle and frequency of visibility.
- Chapter 14 is dedicated to GPS.
- In the sixth and final part, Chapters 15 and 16, theories are applyied first to Mars, then to the other planets, and even to their natural satellites.
