This is the first edition of the European Maritime Transport Environmental Report, and we would like to stress that our focus and motivation has been to provide a factual analysis of the environmental dimension of the maritime transport sector, highlighting, when relevant, challenges and opportunities. As you will read, this report presents up-to-date information on the relevant EU and international environmental standards and describes current and future actions which may contribute positively to the reduction of the impact of maritime transport on our environment. We are all aware that the maritime transport sector is essential when it comes to global trade and the economy, with a strong international dimension and with substantial economic and social benefits to the EU. At the same time, just like other economic activities, we also recognise that it has an impact on the environment, health and wellbeing of EU citizens. Safeguarding the health and wellbeing of citizens and the environment alike is a key prerogative and objective of the EU.
