In the case of a ship under way this means deviating from the original intended tracks, always looking for open water or easier ice conditions and going round the ice, not through it. Experience has demonstrated clearly that although by doing so the distance is increased it is actually quicker - and safer, because contact with ice is eliminated or minimised.
It is not always possible of course to avoid ice, and sooner or later the navigator will be faced with the prospect of going through it if conditions allow. How this can be done with safety in mind is discussed in this manual.
