Year: 1982 Language: english Author: A.G. Bole and K.D. Jones Genre: Manual Publisher: Heineman Edition: 1 Format: PDF Quality: OCR with errors Pages count: 131 Description: The carriage of ARPA systems becomes mandatory for tankers (carrying hazardous cargoes) of more than 10,000 tons trading to the USA from July 1982, and it becomes progressively mandatory worldwide for other vessels of more than 10,000 tons from September 1984. Certification, following approved training for all Masters, Chief Mates and Officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships carrying ARPA, will probably be required. With the fitting of ARPA on ships thus increasing, and the requirement for officer training by IMCO becoming more urgent, it was felt that there was an international need for a manual ofinformation to supplement the period oftraining spent on ARPA Simulator courses. . Practical exercises will naturally predominate in these courses but since present-day ARPA is based on new and modern technology, a much wider appreciation o f the underlying principles and techniques o f operation is necessary if the full potential of the installation is to be realized. The manual follows IMCO specifications and is intended both for maritime students and for navigating and watchkeeping officers at all levels. Its use by students on ARPA courses will reduce their need for note-taking, allqwing them to spend the maximum amount oftime on practical exercises while making available to them the theory on which the practice must be based. For mariners, the manual provides material not normally covered in manufacturers' handbooks and is intended as a reference book for use at sea. It is based on the research and experience gained by the authors at sea and on the Liverpool Polytechnic ARPA Simulator.
