When she broke out into the Atlantic in 1941, some of Britain's most powerful ships were sent to pursue and sink her. The first encounter proved disastrous for the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, which was sunk at 0800 on 24 May. Bismarck had sustained several hits from HMS Prince of Wales but the Royal Navy were unsure of the extent of the damage and whether she would attempt to return to Germany for major repairs or sail for France to lick her wounds. Many earlier accounts of the actions which followed have misunderstood the roles played by radar on both sides and by ULTRA intelligence. In the event Bismarck was spotted by an RAF Catalina aircraft and then subjected to a dramatic series of attacks by Fleet Air Arm Swordfish torpedo planes. She was so badly damaged by the Swordfish that she became; uncontrollable and was caught and destroyed by the heavy ships of the Royal Navy. Both sides displayed the highest levels of courage, skill and-devotion to duty throughout the action.
