Description: This is Shirley's own story of the last lap from Cyprus back to England to complete their 25 year westabout voyage around the world.
"In 1982 in our late forties, we sold the house and car, cashed insurance policies, invested two thirds, then spent the remaining £30,000 on our boat to sail away. It was the best decision of our lives.
We have never looked upon ourselves as real sailors, but here we are, Peter and I, twenty five years later, having completed a 65,000 mile circumnavigation by ourselves in our own boat. Just an ordinary couple with no introductions to auspicious personages, no rally guide to pave the way and little money. We have had a fantastic time and been welcomed into grand houses and native huts, enjoyed the world and relished our freedom."
This book is a brief account of incidents in the last lap of our voyage when after a thrid working opportunity, this time in Shanghai, we rejoined Clypeus in Cyprus anticipating a couple of years to sail home. However, we dawdled - the cruising life was so good in the Mediterranean that when we did eventually turn for home, we made some serious mistakes. Age caught up with us and Peter had a heart attack in Paris. However, here we are in 2010, both well and happy having swopped our beloved boat for a camper van and are now off to explore Europe - free to travel where we wish and in charge of our own destinies again - and without having to worry about the anchor dragging!
Life isn't a rehearsal. There's a wonderful world out there to explore. Today many forty and fifty-year-olds look with dismay at their future prospects - perhaps it would be better to seize the day and enjoy ten or twenty years living the simple life.
