Year: 2004 Language: English Author: Geoff Stewart Genre: Fiction Publisher: The Continuity Company, Melbourne, Australia, 2004 Edition: 2 ISBN: 0-9752328-1-9 Format: PDF Quality: eBook Number of pages: 192 Description: Bored with conventional life in Australia, Geoff Stewart wanted to do something interesting and in the freewheeling spirit of the the times, the rockin 70’s, he hopped a plane to England where he bought a 22 foot Drascombe Longboat, Donna and planned to cruise the Greek islands with it. He didn’t know much about sailing. In fact he knew just about nothing. But he didn’t let a little thing like that stop him. Stewart piloted his open boat across the English Channel, then banged around the canals of France before heading to the Mediterranean Sea. It was here that the idea of sailing across the Atlantic captured his fancy, or, one might say – perhaps more to the point – took hold of his sanity. He figured people had rowed across the ocean in open boats, and he concluded that it wuold probably be much easier to make the long passage to the Caribbean under sail. He decided to give it a try. Packing the boat with provisions and water Stewart pointed the bow of his boat West making his way through the Strait of Gibraltar and out to sea, bound for Barbados. He stopped briefly at the Canary Islands and then sailed on, enduring storms and calms. Sharks followed the boat and eyed him hungrily. Slowly Stewart’s provisions ran out, and things got a tad dicey. Luck favours drunks and sailors, though, because he actually made it across. And it only took 59 days. D.W.S. If you're one of the many people who think there's little adventure in this world, think again. Geoff Stewart is living testimony that there is.
