LR Summary Report for the IMO Ship Design and Construction Ninth session (SDC 9)
Year: 2023 Language: english Author: Lloyd's Register Genre: Normative document Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 11 Description: Below are some of the topics which were discussed at SDC 9 and will have some impact on current requirements: • Draft revised performance standards for water level detectors on bulk carriers and single hold cargo ships other than bulk carriers were agreed (Agenda Item 12). The amendments clearly state the differences between installation height requirements of alarm sensors and bilge level sensors. • The review of the Guidelines for the reduction of underwater noise (MEPC.1/Circ.833) was finalised (Agenda Item 5). The next steps include identifying primary contributors to underwater noise generated by ships, a general approach that designers, shipbuilders, shipowners and ship operators can undertake, and provision of an underwater noise reduction management planning tool. • Agreed draft Unified Interpretations are: (Agenda Item 10) − Interpretation of regulation II-1 adopted by resolutions MSC.474(102) and MSC.482(103) to explain what regulations apply to ships with a contracted date before 1 Jan 2024 but a keel laying date between 1 Jan 2024 and 30 June 2024; − Interpretation of regulation II-1/13.2.3 – testing and type approval of heat-sensitive piping penetrating watertight bulkheads on passenger ships to maintain watertight integrity. • Revision of the Safe Return to Port (SRtP) interim explanatory notes (Agenda Item 11). The industry has been gathering experience since the MSC Circular has been adopted. Some areas of improvements, especially around single voyages exceeding SRtP range, crew operation and the use of gas as fuel or other low-flash point fuels, on passenger ships have been thoroughly discussed. It was agreed that MSC.1/Circ.1369 can be revised and this work will be undertaken by a Correspondence Group. Additional details can be found under the relevant subject headings in the document.
