Description: For more than 30 years. the ICS Guide to Helicopter/Ship Operations has been recognized
throughout the global shipping industry as the definitive best practice guidance on the subject. As
with previous versions, this new and fully updated edition of the Guide has bean published after wide
consultation with both marine and aviation experts. Its purpose remains the same: to encourage
safe and efficient helicopter/ship operations. While the Guide is intended really for the use of ships'
Masters. officers and crew, it also offers advice to helicopter pilots and operators. The objective is to
promote standardized procedures and shipboard facilities for helicopter/ship operations worldwide.
The fifth edition of the Guide supersedes all previous editions.
That previous edition introduced guidance on the practice of transferring personate usually marine
pilots, directly to the bridge wing by winch. This new edition retains current ICS advice that bridge
wing operations should not normality be conducted, particularly when more conventional transfer
arrangements can be provided. Nevertheless reflecting the fact that for some ships and trades bridge
wing winching of marine pilots has become more common guidance on the practice has been moved
to the main part of the publication with associated advice on risk assessment retained as an appendix.
The Guide reflects the latest advice from industry experts together with feedback from marine
and aviation users. To improve the flow of information and access to topics, the opportunity has
been taken to restructure the layout. Some guidance previously included in appendices has boon
transferred to the main text.
Chapter 2 now includes guidance (consistent with other ICS publications) on the conduct of risk
assessments as well as guidance previously included. Chapter 5 continues to place emphasis on
the importance of communications while revised guidance in Chapters 6 and 7 addresses operating
procedures and bridge wing operations for marine pilot transfer, respectively. Expanded guidance
on ship type requirements is now included in Chapter 8. A new Chapter 9 incorporates much of the
guidance on the Helicopter Landing/Operating Area Plan that was previously in an appendix. Also
new to this edition are lists of abbreviations and definition.
The practice, now common in ICS publications, of highlighting safety messages in yellow boxes
has bean adopted for the first time in this edition of the Guide and draws particular attention to key
messages with in the text.
The safety checklists in Appendix C have been revised to batter reflect human factors and are
in a style consistent with other recent ICS publications. All checklist item require a positive
combination. If this cannot be given, the reason and mitigating actions should be carefully
considered before the operation can proceed.
