The process has continued to the present day: the classic British motorsailers were derived from the Scottish double-ended fishing boats. The broadbeamed, square-sterned American motur yachts were based on the Gulf prawners and Alaskan salmon seiners, and the sleek Scandinavian yachts owe much to the Viking long boats and the sailing lifeboats, redningskoites. designed by the legendary Colin Archer. Just as previous generations produced famous navigators and explorers, so the last century has given yachting its own pioneers: men who in their time were 'oddballs', some celebrated, others known only because of their writings. Those who cruised the oceans single-handed were probably held in the same awe that we reserve for those who have been to the moon.
