Description: When considering history’s greatest architectural creations; pyramids, the golden gate bridge, the Eiffel tower, or the late twin towers often come to mind. Yet, one of the greatest architectural accomplishments in human history is often left unconsidered. In 1994, the Society of Civil Engineers declared the Panama Canal (or the Big Ditch) one of the seven wonders of the modern world as it remains one of the greatest achievements of the 20th century.
Every year, the Panama Canal assists 13,000 to 14,000 ships in crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, an average of 38 ships daily. By providing a shortcut through the Isthmus of Panama, the canal shaves approximately 22 days and 8,000 nautical miles off a sailor’s journey as it only requires eight to ten hours to pass through the canal. Additionally, sailors avoid dangers involved with sailing around the southern tip of South America via the Cape Horn route or the Drake Passage.
"A Short History Of…" is a collection of short books, about 5,000 words each. The goal of each book is a quick overview of a unique topic or focus area. Some are mainstream, some are not, but each subject is fascinating in and of itself.
Every book introduces the topic, provides a timeline encompassing significant events, identifies 'good' facts that are believed to be true and 'popular' facts that may be inaccurate. It also conducts a deep dive into three of the most prominent timeline events or items associated with the subject.
