Description: Some points we pass in life may be purely topographical ones, for instance when we pass certain places, on land or sea, which possess a striking appearance
or are established by tradition. A sailor, who for example has never been past Kullen or across the Equator is not considered a real deep sea sailor by his fortunate shipmates who have already passed these places. It is obvious, therefore, that when at last he does come there—whether it be a particularly striking natural feature like a headland or an island, or a purely abstract geographical conception like “the Line”—he must be baptized and at the same time give his more experienced shipmates a treat.
