Issue January, 2026 | Case study – Leaking cargo hold hatch. | After departing the U.S. West Coast with grain cargo and clean bills of lading, a bulk carrier encountered severe weather in the North Pacific. Heavy seas compromised hatch cover sealing, leading to seawater ingress and cargo damage in forward holds. Subsequent inspection identified leaking hatch cover joints and deteriorated sealing rubbers.
