Module 1: Introduction to the Shipping
Industry and the Role of the Ship Manager
The shipping industry is a very complex and demanding industry. This can be seen by
the variety of ship types that trade and the cargoes that they carry.
In addition, there are all the support organisations and industry bodies as well as third
party interested organisations.
Due to the various aspects of shipping, it is not possible to know everything and even to
know where to find relevant details is a huge endeavour. The most important item is
knowing where to find the relevant details/legislation and apply it.
That is why so many people specialise in specific ship types and trades and become to
some extent an expert in their chosen speciality.
Ship management has a few core elements that are common to all ship types and this
forms the central theme of this course.
