Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project, the world’s first, is approaching its completion at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard but still there is a long way to go. A special milestone was achieved with the last of the topside modules safely installed, as shown in the video. Now it is up to the engineers to breath life into the vessel and resume with the remaining finishing touches. Once completed, the Prelude will boast 488 metres in length, 74 metres in width, and more than 260,000 tonnes of steel. At full load, she will displace more than 600,000 tonnes; more than five times the displacement of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The FLNG is aimed at helping unlock new energy resources offshore and has the potential to revolutionize the way natural gas resources are developed, according to Shell.
