Description: Many ocean and sea areas of the world are susceptible to sea ice: in addition to the polar seas, the Baltic Sea and the northern Yellow Sea, for example. Sea ice occurs in a wide range of types and forms, and affects significantly and directly marine transport and navigation. The Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) promotes and coordinates international cooperation in the acquisition, exchange, archival and dissemination of sea-ice information. The WMO publication ‘Sea Ice Information Services in the World’ (WMO No. 574) is intended to provide to mariners and other users the latest snapshot of the sea ice services available world-wide, extending others information for shipping.
