Description: From t h e practical standpoint, this Guide represents the culmination
of the research program on fatigue in welded steel offshore structures
initiated in late 1976 by a group formed by Centre National pour
1'Exploitation des Ocgans (CNEXO), Institut FranCais du P6trole (IFP)
and SocigtB Nationale Elf Aquitaine (Production) (SNEA-PI, assisted by a
Fatigue Technical Committee, and continued, since 1983, by Association
de Recherche sur les Structures MBtalliques Marines (ARSEM).
These researches are conducted as part of a French national
research program' coordinated by Cornit6 d'Etudes Pgtrolisres Marines.
The f i r s t phase of this work, which extended from 1977 to 1979, was
intended to improve knowledge about the fatigue behavior of welded
tubular joints subjected to random loads due t o natural elements (wave,
wind, current). It comprises two complementary parts, one theoretical
and the second experimental:
(1) t h e theoretical part was entrusted to Laboratoire de M6canique
(2) t h e experimental part was entrusted t o Institut de Recherches de
des Solides a t t h e Ecole Polytechnique (LMS).

The experimental part represented t h e French contribution to a vast
European research program on fatigue in welded offshore structures,
co-funded by t h e Commission of European Communities (ECSC) and t h e
member countries participating in t h e program: United Kingdom, Federal
Republic of Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and Italy. Norway joined
t h e program subsequently.
The r e s u l t s of this high quality work were presented a t two
International Conferences, one held in Cambridge (United Kingdom) from
27 t o 29 November 1978, and t h e second in Paris (France) from 5 to
8 October 1981.
