The Nautilus Telegraph journal is published mainly in English, with a section in Dutch. Our Telegraph magazine appears every two months. In the first Telegraph of 2024, we are pleased to bring you positive news. Following industrial action. Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has backed down from its threat of fire and rehire and returned to the negotiating table (pages 14-15). The strong mandate that members gave to Nautilus in the ballot, and the solidarity shown during the action itself, proved decisive. Talks have now resumed and the Union will be pushing hard for an acceptable resolution regarding live onboard arrangements. Regular readers of the Telegraph will also be aware of Nautilus's record of reclaiming unpaid wages. This has continued, with a judgment in Antigua's High Court granting more than a year's worth of backpay for crew of the yacht Alfa Nero. It's an important win on untested legal territory, as the case arose due to sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine (page 19). We have also been active in the inland waterways sector (pages 26-27), and the Union's campaign for a Just Transition for maritime workers was given a boost at the UN climate conference COP28 (pages 34-35). Governments will now be expected to ensure support for those impacted by the transition to new technology. It will be up to us to hold them to this, and make employers understand their responsibilities too. Nautilus's work on behalf of maritime professionals never stops, and we are already looking ahead as our members at the Royal Fleet Auxiliary hold their vote on industrial action.
