This is a comprehensive work that covers thoroughly the practical use of celestial navigation at sea based upon a compilation of ideas gained in teaching classes of adults celestial navigation at the University. Celestial navigation can be a lot of fun and a good sextant is a handy tool for a sailor.
The first five chapters explain the meaning of the terms used in navigation, and explain the concepts behind the practical side of modern marine navigation. Chapters 6 through 16 are "how to" lessons. The student should study these chapters with contious reference to the appendix and the excerpts from the sight reduction tables and almanacs printed there. Each step can be repeated until he feels he has mastered the chapter. In each chapter, the steps are outlined with a detailed narrative explanation of what is involved. The same problem or a similar problem is worked again using the format that would be used in actual practice. Exercise problems are then provided.
