Fregat and Snau - Small Cruisers in the Danish Navy 1650-1750
Year: 2008 Language: english Author: Auer J. Genre: Research papers Publisher: University of Southern Denmark Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 405 Description: In common perception sailing warships of the 17th and 18th century were large and prestigious ships of the line, just as HMS Victory, the flagship of Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar. It is true that most naval battles were decided by these ships, but the sailing navies also included a whole range of smaller vessels which operated outside of the line of battle. One example are cruisers, warships mainly built for cruising against enemy ships or privateers. These vessels were small, uncomfortable and far less prestigious than ships of the line, but most famous naval officers began their career on such vessels. Nelson's first command was the small brig Badger, and the infamous Danish naval hero Tordenskjold was first put in charge of the 12m long Ormen. This study investigates the origins, the development and the use of the smallest naval cruisers in the Danish navy of the 17th and 18th century. These cruisers were frequently referred to as fregat and snau, frigate and snow. Both terms originally described privateering vessels used on the North Sea coast of Flanders during the 80 Years War. In order to determine how the later naval cruisers in Denmark related to the ships they took their names from, a chapter was dedicated to the origins and development of the Flemish frigate and snow. Additional info: Докторская диссертация датского ученого (на английском языке) посвящена истории строительства и использования в боевых действиях малых разведывательных и патрульных фрегатов в датском флоте в период с 1650 по 1750 годы.
