A Ketch Called Tahiti: John G. Hanna and His Yacht Designs
Year: 1987 Language: english Author: John Stephen Doherty Genre: Guide Publisher: Intl Marine Pub Co Edition: First ISBN: 0-87742-209-5 Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages Pages count: 193 Description: The Tahiti ketch ... the very name has magic to it! This sturdy 30-footer rolled off the drawing board of designer John G. Hanna in the early 1920s, but made her of¬ ficial debut in 1935 among the designs in a book called How to Build 20 Boats. From that time on she seemed destined to reach out and touch responsive chords in the minds of backyard boatbuilders in every comer of the world. For about forty years (until eclipsed by the era of high-tech, fi¬ berglass cruising yachts), this would be the design that logged more ocean cruising miles than any other, bringing Hanna last¬ ing fame. Although this book gives top billing to the Tahiti ketch, its real subject is the entire career of the naval architect and nautical writer whose name for more than twenty-five years of American boating his¬ tory was synonymous with “sturdy boats, well built.’’ The first section, a biography of Hanna, is followed by a detailed presen¬ tation of more than thirty of his most im¬ portant designs, each handsomely illus¬ trated and with detailed specifications and photographs. This section also includes a sprinkling of vignettes and cruising lore from Hanna boat owners. The final section is a collection of Hanna’s own nautical writing, collected (and in a few cases, pub¬ lished) for the first time.
