Year: 2020 Language: english Author: Laura Burroughs Genre: Research papers Publisher: Stable Seas & One Earth Future Edition: December Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 116 Description: Few, if any, of the world’s maritime regions offer the diverse economic potential found in the Caribbean Sea. Pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and biodiverse coral reefs attract more than 30 million tourists each year. Small and distinctive countries with unique cultures and pleasant waters bring in recreational yachters and sailors. The eastern Caribbean is traversed by the world’s largest cruise ships, while the western Caribbean benefits from commercial traffic concentrated around the Panama Canal, the western hemisphere’s most critical shipping chokepoint. Offshore hydrocarbons abound, with deposits occurring in abundance from the south of the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of Guyana and Venezuela, the latter of which has more proven oil reserves than any other country in the world. Simply stated, each sector of the region’s “blue economy” is just as promising as the next. Yet despite this potential, a close look at the maritime security of the region reveals myriad challenges. Frustratingly, some challenges are widely known, while others are commonly neglected and misunderstood. A region that has historically been stereotyped for its Golden Age of Piracy is now known for the presence of cocaine trafficking cartels that evade law enforcement efforts while bringing drugs produced in South America to North American and European markets. This is certainly a major challenge in the Caribbean, but the concentrated attention to this specific crime means that many other maritime security themes are not acknowledged. This report seeks to cover those themes that lie beyond the region’s infamous maritime security threats.
