Year: 2012 Language: english Author: Julian Chitta Genre: History Edition: Kindle Format: EPUB Quality: eBook Pages count: 131 Description: "Jupiter: The Ghost Ship" is a short trip into the past, examining the life and work of a Great lakes dry cargo ship, built in 1901 and scrapped in 1970, the Jupiter. Over seven decades of sailing the Great Lakes, she had several owners and a lot more officers and crew members, each one of them with their own dreams and aspirations, laboring hard on water routes. This ship carried various commodities between the ports of call, from coal, iron ore, bauxite, sand, gravel, and grains to livestock and manufactured goods. Surviving all the economic changes brought about by two World Wars and a Depression, this ship went through a slow process of modernization, first changing from coal to oil-fuel, later from steam to Diesel power. After the radio and radar introduction, this ship was able to haul her cargo through fog and dark nights at profitable speeds, keeping everybody on board in paychecks. The captain was not the most important person on board. The cook was! The ship's involvement in disputes with the labor unions, and the schemes devised to avoid conflict, gained her the name of "Ghost Ship". Constantly chased by someone, be it the International Mariners' Union, or the Coast Guard the ship was so elusive in its sailing, that the frustration of her enemies just about reached a boiling point. The history of the "Jupiter", put together by substantial research into the maritime archives, museums and newspapers of that period, can offer the reader a unique perspective upon many facts ignored by history. Thank you for sailing with the author, on the "Jupiter"! Additional info: About the Author: The author is a retired electrical engineer, and a former US Merchant Marine Officer, a captain, who delights in doing historical research in order to write books on subjects largely ignored by others. His conversational style makes for an easy lecture in which the most rigid technical terms become tame and brings the reader along a factual trip.
