Aircraft carriers helped to provide the air power that supported Allied amphibious assaults and, most significantly of all, decided the basic shape of the war between Japan and the USA in the Pacific theatre. The trends evident in World War II became more pronounced in the ‘Cold War’ that soon followed. In this unfought war, which could so easily have led to the Armageddon of World War III, the escort ship, amphibious warfare vessel, aircraft carrier and submarine were the major arbiters. The end of the‘Cold War’ has thrown all into confusion as requirements are altered and scaled down in size, and as manpower strengths amid military budgets are lashed.The warship is still a vital element in most countries’ concept of national defence, however, and the scope of naval warfare has been widened by the large-scale adoption of missile¬armed fast attack craft.
