Description: What is a guidebook? It's a volume about the virtues of planning ahead so that you have the time and information to choose correctly. It's a collection of ideas with the final decisions left up to you. It's a list of everything you'll need to create a comfortable home on the high seas.
It's a "what-to" book, rather than a "how-to" book that simply gives you directions. There's a special kind of creativity that flares up when a sailor takes a boat and turns it into a dream boat. But this creativity only seems to be possible when knowledge and understanding are already present.
We have to confess that a little "how-to" snuck in. It's impossible to talk about steel boats, and especially modem steel boats, without delving into the new design and building techniques that are used to turn out the beautiful yachts presently afloat.
Whether you 're an armchair dreamer, an intermediate adventurer, or a genuine salty dog, we hope that this guidebook has something for you. The emphasis is on providing information to help anyone organize a logical plan to obtain and outfit a steel boat. Since the internal organization of the book is in approximately the same order in which you'd put a cruising sailboat together, you can pick it up at any stage. If you're building a complete boat yourself, most of the decisions you'll have to make are outlined and discussed. If you're having a boat built, you 'll be able to understand what the designer and builder are talking about, so that you can participate more effectively in the process. If you 're already designing or building steel boats, there should be some food for thought.
It was the Industrial Revolution that gave us steel, but today's revolution is in marine technology. New formulations of paint offer incredible corrosion resistance for steel hulls. Improved welding techniques and equipment allow lighter scantlings to be used in constructing steel yachts that can outperform and outlast their forerunners. At the same time, interest in the traditional marine trades like foundry work is increasing. Blending technology and the traditional wisdom of the sea is the challenge in outfitting a steel cruiser.
Outfitting a boat involves making a series of decisions about what kinds of materials and joinery to use. These choices are especially important on a steel boat, because many of the traditional materials and installation methods are not compatible with steel's requirements for protection from corrosion. There are so many products available to mariners today that it's important to understand which are appropriate for every system of the boat. In each of the chapters on boat systems, we will be focusing on the pro's and cons of the various materials. The choices are here, but you decide exactly what you need. Cost is always an issue when a major expenditure is planned. The appendix on Material Costs is an excellent planning and budgeting tool that challenges you to beat the lowest prices listed.
When it comes to outfittingyour dream boat, use and lifestyle are what count. And everyone has a different dream. Ours is a center-cockpit ketch with a round hull, which is equipped as a comfortable, but simple, liveaboard home for world cruising. If someone finds water desalination units or electric dishwashers missing from the list of "basics," we're sorry, but that was ourchoice.
Another choice we had to make was what to call this creation of steel and wood and plastic and paint and wire and rope that we're dissecting here. We chose not to decide, since, frankly, we needed as many different words as we could find for the central topic of this book. The term "yacht" has unfortunate connotations of wealthy characters cruising a Sound, sipping a dacquiri delivered by a white-jacketed steward. But "yacht" also means a beautiful, well-cared-for boat with her sails glowing in the reflected sunset. "Cruiser" might make some people think about power boats, but it's a word that encompasses the notion of living and traveling onboard a sailing home. "Boat" is simple and useful, and "vessel" adds a few tons of dignity to any discussion.
We are perhaps proudest of the Directory of Designers and Builders Working in Steel that is part of Steel Away. It's the first-ever attempt to provide a list of professionals working in the field. We hope that it serves its dual purpose: to become a resource for sailors who want boats designed and built and to recognize those people who are creating boats that are so beautiful and seaworthy that they shiver your timbers.
This guidebook is not the final word on steel boats. Steel is just now coming of age for the cruising yacht, and the final word is many years away. There are still too many questions to be answered and too much research to be carried out at sea. We'll do our best to further the gathering of knowledge, because we've seen the writing on the wall: Steel Away!
