Description: Nowadays the seed cake entry in IMSBC code covers a wider range of products that are made from seeds, grains, cereals, fruit or vegetables. Seed cake cargoes are commonly shipped for use as animal feed or biofuel, and are usually transported in the form of pulp, meals, cake, pellets and expellers. With some exceptions, seed cake is a hazardous cargo that can self-heat owing to the residual oil content and/or the presence of moisture, due to the fact the bulk temperature of the cargo can rise to the point of spontaneous ignition. The shipper is required, according to the provisions of the IMSBC code, to provide a certificate from a person recognised by the competent authority of the country of shipment confirming the oil and moisture content of the shipment, on the basis of which the category of the seed cake cargo is determined.
This guide, aimed to masters and cargo officers, outlines the main recommendations regarding seed cake carriage, updated to IMSBC code 5th revision (amendment 05-19), entered into force on 1 January 2021, and supersedes the previously issued Standard Cargo publications on the ‘Carriage of Seedcake’.
As examples of good or bad practice brief case studies are provided.
Additional info: Standard Club is a specialist marine and energy insurer that also provides advice and best practices documents aimed to better know and manage risks related to marine and offshore activity.
