Description: With the advent of more powerful tugs, it has become apparent that any incompatibility between the forces exerted by a tug and the shipboard fittings used to guide and secure the tug's towing line, can prejudice the safety of personnel on the tanker and on the tug; prejudice the security of the towing connection; and or cause physical damage to equipment on the tanker and on the tug.
These difficulties can be overcome by ensuring that shipboard fittings for use with tugs, including fittings intended for multiple applications that will include the use of tugs, are properly placed, sized, reinforced and identified.
The purpose of this document is to provide the tanker industry with guidance and recommendations regarding the provision of ship's fittings for use with tugs.
