Year: 1977 Language: english Author: Robin Knox-Johnston Genre: Handbook Publisher: International Library Edition: First ISBN: 0 00 103332 8 Format: PDF Quality: Scanned pages Pages count: 133 Description: Sailing small boats for pleasure began in Holland in the 17th century. Popularized in Britain by Charles II, after he had spent part of his exile there, sailing spread throughout the world and developed its own language, folklore and way of life. Sailing explores the world of the small boat, introducing the readers to it in such a way that if they are not already addicted to the salt and spray of the sea, they will soon want to be. A brief history tells of the growth of sailing as a sport and the start of dinghy racing in the 19th century. An entire chapter is devoted to dinghies—giving the specifications for each class of boat and containing many hints on how to sail them. Recent developments in multihulls and experimental craft are discussed and described in fascinating detail. For those who are just getting involved in the sport the section on cruising deals with such essentials as what to look for when buying a boat, how to make sure that there is enough food on board to satisfy the hearty appetites built up during a day’s sailing, repairs, naviga- tion and most important of all—safety. The glamour of ocean racing, the America’s Cup, Olympic sailing and the stories of the many epic voyages made by sailors past and present, all play a part in the eternal appeal of sailing as a sport, a relaxation and a challenge. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robin Knox-Johnston is known internationally as one of the great yachtsmen of the century. Hi joined the British Merchant Navy in 1956 am obtained his Master's Ticket in 1965.
