Alfred Mylne The Leading Yacht Designer Volume 1, 1896-1920
Year: 2015 Language: english Author: Ian Nicolson, David Gray Genre: Documentation Publisher: Amberley Publishing ISBN: 9781445646343 Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 174 Description: Alfred Mylne was a naval architect contemporary and friend of William Fife, to the point that the only three yachts built in the Fife yard, not designed by Fife, were Mylne designed. With few exceptions built of wood, they marked an unforgettable era, from the end of the nineteenth century to the WW2. The author states that "Beautiful boats last a long time, but ugly ones die young", and this is probably the reasons why there are so many Alfred Mylne-designed yachts still sailing, some of them well over one hundred years old. Alfred Mylne was a successful yacht designer, and also an innovator. Some of his yachts had fin keels with bulbs in the early 1900s, and some others had roller-furling headsails before 1914. This book is based on the rich heritage of the Mylne archives, consisting of sketches, plans, paintings, blue prints, and a set of exceptional half models, some of wich are in the Greenwich National Maritime Museum, others are in the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, in the Royal Thames Yacht Club in London and in other yacht clubs round the world. The book is divided into chapters dedicated to projects, well represented by general and sail plans, lines, details, up to hardware fittings. A brief introduction open each chapter. Chapters 1 - 19 are dedicated to sail yachts, chapters 20 - 25 to power yachts. Additional info: - Folder includes azw3, epub, and pdf file of the same book, for convenience; azw3 is the original file. - Pages count refers to pdf edition.
