Description: In recent years, the development of metallic products with additive manufacturing (AM) technology, notably 3D printing, has rapidly increased, become more widespread, and used particularly in the automotive, aerospace, medical care, and industrial equipment fields. The reasons include the molding capability for shapes that were used possible in the past, a feature of additive manufacturing. This capability allows the molding of complicated 3D shapes, grating structures, and graded structures and allows the manufacture of highly designed products, a technology resulting from a major revolution in manufacturing.
Additive manufacturing has a long history derived from the invention of optical modeling with ultraviolet rays and photosensitive resin in early 1980’s in Japan and was commercialized and applied by US and Japanese companies. The technology was initially concentrated in resin modeling, research was conducted for application to metallic materials in the US, and then many AM machines were developed.
Recently, where the environmental load has become a worldwide concern, additive manufacturing technology that allows for the efficient manufacture of products and the laborsaving process have attracted attention, and the market size of an AM machines is growing year after year. Therefore, the expectation is that additive manufacturing technology will be applied to more product manufacturing and even to vessel equipment.
Under this historical background, ClassNK has summarized the terminology, type, and features of the technologies in Part 1 of these guidelines as part of its introduction to additive manufacturing technologies. In addition, the approval requirements for metallic vessel equipment have been summarized in Part 2. On the other hand, the approval requirements are also conceived for vessel equipment other than metallic vessel equipment, and the establishment of related requirements is under consideration for an early date.
Our goal is that these guidelines will help in the understanding and use of additive manufacturing, as well as the approval process for products manufactured with the technology
