Year: 2025 Language: English Author: Maritime SheEO Genre: Report Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 84 Description: This study examines the landscape of gender inclusion in Sri Lanka’s maritime sector, drawing on both qualitative and quantitative insights from seafarers, shore-based employees, employers, and industry experts. While the sector has made encouraging strides, persistent structural and cultural barriers continue to limit women’s participation—particularly in leadership, operational roles, and access to training. Key findings reveal the continued underrepresentation of women in senior leadership positions onshore, and junior seafaring positions, low numbers of female applicants, and ongoing challenges related to safety, cultural expectations, and limited policy support. However, promising shifts are underway, driven by the introduction of entorship programs, targeted awareness campaigns, and more flexible workplace policies. This study was commissioned to assess and document the current landscapeof gender inclusion within Sri Lanka’s maritime sector. As a historically male-dominated industry, the maritime field poses unique challenges for women, particularly in operational, seafaring, and leadership roles. Additional info: Maritime SheEO is a pioneering initiative dedicated to empowering women in the maritime industry. Our mission is to create opportunities, foster leadership, and promote diversity and inclusion within the maritime sector.
