S-57 to S-100: Understanding Change; Preparing for Transition
Year: 2025 Language: English Author: Intertanko Genre: Other Publisher: Intertanko Edition: 1st edition Format: PDF Quality: eBook Pages count: 16 Description: The S-57 Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data, adopted by the IHO in May 1992, has been successfully standardized for electronic navigational charts (ENCs) across various national hydrographic offices worldwide. It was instrumental in the development of Electronic Chart and Display Information Systems (ECDIS), which rely on ENCs for safe and efficient navigation. More than 70 national hydrographic offices have created ENCs that are compatible with over 50 different ECDIS systems. S-57 succeeded because Edition 3.1 of the standard was frozen until November 2002, allowing hydrographic offices to produce ENC data consistently and enabling ECDIS equipment manufacturers to develop reliable systems. However, this freeze also limited the standard’s ability to evolve with modern technology. Updates to S-57 standards are now cumbersome and often require software updates, modifications to ECDIS, or specialist support. Additional info: IMPORTANT: The new IMO Performance Standard allows the safety contour alarm to be turned off during pilotage, replacing it with a permanent on-screen indication. While potentially reducing alarm fatigue, navigators must be wary of the dangers it can introduce. There is a possibility of inadvertent deselection or leaving the safety contour alarm off after pilot disembarkation. Bridge procedures must be adjusted to mitigate such risks.
